For lovers, in love’s law, there’s sweet consent,
So, youth, with words of blame, do not lament.
My soul’s a gift for those I love, though they
Have broken the vows that once did hold their sway.
Come, hear the tale of one who loved too well,
Who died in love before his heart’s wish fell.
He saw, he loved, then sought their closeness dear,
But patience failed, and death soon claimed him near.

This poem by Al-Shabb Al-Zarif is a reflection on the deep, often painful experience of love. The poet begins by stating that true lovers find contentment in the very laws of love, no matter how harsh they may be, and advises against resisting the trials of love. In the second verse, he expresses his devotion to his beloved, declaring that even if they break their promises, his heart remains loyal.

The third and fourth verses tell the tragic story of a lover who, overwhelmed by his passion, sought to unite with his beloved. However, his attempts at patience and perseverance failed, and he ultimately died, unable to achieve his heart’s desire.
