شرح الأبيات:
قصيدة أبو تمام القصيرة هذه تعبر عن معاناة الشاعر مع الفراق وآلامه. يبدأ الشاعر بوصف البُعد عن الحبيب وكأنه جرّعه مرارة الحنظل، وهو نبات معروف بمرارته الشديدة، مما يعبر عن الألم الشديد الذي يشعر به بسبب الفراق. الشاعر يؤكد أن البعد جعله يعيش في حزن مستمر حتى وإن لم يفقد أحدًا، حيث يعتبر الفراق بحد ذاته مصيبة.
ثم ينتقل إلى الحديث عن الحب الأول، مبينًا أن كل التجارب اللاحقة في الحب لا تستطيع أن تمحو أثر الحبيب الأول من القلب. حيث يبين أن الإنسان قد يرتبط بأماكن متعددة، لكن الحنين يبقى دائمًا لأول مكان سكنه وعاش فيه لحظاته الأولى من السعادة والحب.
