قومٌ إذا استنبحَ الأضيافُ كلبهُمُ
قالوا لأمّهِمِ: بُولي على النّارِ
فتُمْسِكُ البَوْلَ بُخْلاً أنْ تجودَ بهِ
وما تبولُ لهم إلا بمقدارِ
شرح الأبيات
يُعتَبر هذا البيت أحد أقسى أبيات الهجاء التي أنشدها العرب. يصوِّر الشاعر فيه مدى بخل هؤلاء القوم، حيث إنهم في حالة رؤية الضيوف لنارهم وسماعهم نباح كلبهم، يأمرون أمهم بالتبول على النار لكي تُطفئها، حتى لا يراها الضيوف فينزلوا بهم، من شدة بخلهم أيضًا أنهم يأمرون أمهم بالتبول عليها. وما يزيد الأمر سوءًا هو بخل الأم نفسها، التي تبول بكمية محددة فقط، بما يكفي لإطفاء النار.
English translation
These folks, when guests approach their door and their hound begins to roar,
Command their mother with a glance: “Piss upon the fire’s dance.”
Yet she, in miserly affair, holds her urine with utmost care,
Deigns not to release, but sparingly, except by strictest measure, verily.
Explanation of poetry verses in English:
This verse provides a scathing critique of a group’s extreme stinginess. The poet portrays a scenario where upon the arrival of guests, signalled by the barking of their dog, they instruct their own mother to urinate on the fire to extinguish it. This is so the guests do not see the fire and decide to stay with them. What’s more, their stinginess extends to even the use of water to put out the fire. They prefer to use urine, and the mother, exhibiting her own parsimony, urinates only in controlled amounts, just enough to extinguish the fire.

Le poète dépeint un scénario où, à l’arrivée des invités, signalée par l’aboiement de leur chien, ils demandent à leur propre mère d’uriner sur le feu pour l’éteindre. Cela est fait pour que les invités ne voient pas le feu et décident de rester avec eux. De plus, leur avarice s’étend même à l’utilisation de l’eau pour éteindre le feu. Ils préfèrent utiliser l’urine, et la mère, faisant preuve de son propre esprit d’économie, urine seulement en quantités contrôlées, juste assez pour éteindre le feu.

Ayat ini memberikan kritik tajam tentang kepelitan ekstrem sebuah kelompok. Penyair menggambarkan skenario dimana saat tamu datang, ditandai dengan gonggongan anjing mereka, mereka memerintahkan ibu mereka sendiri untuk buang air kecil di api untuk memadamkannya. Ini dilakukan agar para tamu tidak melihat api dan memutuskan untuk tinggal bersama mereka. Bahkan, kepelitannya meluas hingga penggunaan air untuk memadamkan api. Mereka lebih memilih untuk menggunakan air seni, dan ibu, menunjukkan kikirnya sendiri, hanya buang air kecil dalam jumlah yang terkontrol, cukup untuk memadamkan api.
